Tamika Whitmore Named WNBA Player of the Week

NEW YORK, July 22 - Tamika Whitmore of the New York Liberty was named the WNBA Player of the Week for games played Wednesday, July 17 through Sunday, July 21.

Whitmore averaged a league high-tying 19.0 points as she led the Liberty (13-9) to two victories during the week. Her performance included 61.9 percent shooting from the floor (13-of-21) to go along with 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per contest.

On June 18, Whitmore scored a game-high 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting (.786) as New York claimed a 72-59 victory over first place Los Angeles. She followed with 13 points on June 19 as the Liberty defeated the Indiana Fever 70-62.

Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Charlotte's Kelly Miller, Detroit's Swin Cash, Houston's Tina Thompson, Los Angeles' Mwadi Mabika, Portland's Tamicha Jackson, Utah's Margo Dydek and Washington's Vicky Bullett.

The 2002 WNBA Playoffs tip off on Thursday, August 15, and the 2002 WNBA Finals will get underway on August 29.
