McCarville and U.S. Select Team Roll Into Semi-Finals With Wednesday Victory
Liberty Center Enters Starting Line-Up & Grabs Game-High 13 Boards

Facing a must-win situation in order to keep its championship hopes alive, the USA Women’s Select Team (2-1) outlasted a strong CSKA Moscow (2-1) pro team 81-72 to advance to the semifinal round at the 2007 FIBA World League Tournament in Ekaterinburg, Russia, on Wednesday night.

The Liberty’s Janel McCarville made her first appearance in the starting line-up, scored four points, dished out two assists and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in 35 minutes. Seimone Augustus (Minnesota Lynx) led the American women with 19 points, while Katie Smith (Detroit Shock) had 16 and Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury) added 15. Read the full game re-cap here.

“We needed her in the starting lineup tonight to really help Taj (McWilliams-Franklin) set a tone inside,” said USA head coach Anne Donovan of adding McCarville to the starters on Wednesday. “She rebounded so well tonight. Janel does a lot of little things, she passes the ball very well and makes their bigs guard her.”

McCarville is now averaging 11.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in the Tournament and is shooting a team-high 54.4-percent from the field. She led the WNBA in field goal shooting this past summer, with a career-best 54.6-percent in the regular season. She is the U.S. team’s leading rebounder and is currently ranked second overall in the Tournament.

While McCarville’s team-mate guard Loree Moore did not play, as she was nursing a sore knee, the U.S. got plenty of her support from the sidelines. “I think the team did a great job,” said Moore. “They continued to keep the tempo high throughout the game. They made a lot of stops defensively and just played together. There’s a lot of camaraderie on the bench and on the court, you could see everyone was into it, they were all in sync with what was going on and it was fun to watch.” Moore is currently listed as day-to-day.

Next up for the Americans is a semifinal match-up against the top finisher in Group A, host UMMC Ekaterinburg (3-0) on Friday, October 26th at 9:00 a.m. EDT.
