Training Camp Update with Trainer Lisa White

With one week of Training Camp in the books, the New York Liberty are gearing up for Week Two and the pre-season opener in Connecticut is just around the corner. This week NYLiberty.com is checking in with the team to see how it’s been so far and what they’re doing to prepare for the 2007 season.

Today we're visiting with a person who knows the in’s and out’s of Training Camp, head athletic trainer Lisa White. Lisa is an original member of the Liberty staff and is entering her 11th season in the WNBA. As the Liberty's head athletic trainer, her day-to-day focus is the care and prevention of injuries as well as coordinating rehabilitation programs. She also implements strength and conditioning regimens specifically designed for each player.

What's your favorite part of Training Camp?

I like meeting the draft picks and new players and helping them adjust to being in New York and playing on the professional level.

How do you feel the team did during the first week of Camp?

The players worked very hard and made great improvements in such a short amount of time.

What do you think is the best strategy for a player to survive the first few weeks of practice?

I think the best thing they can do is come to Training Camp in shape. The days are long and the coaches expect them to be ready to play. In addition to playing basketball, they lift weights, so it is definitely beneficial to be in shape.

How do you think the rookies are responding to their new lives?

I think they are adjusting quite well. They have all played at a high level prior to arriving here, but there is still an adjustment period. I think we try to give them as much information as possible – their living arrangements, transportation, etc., so they can focus on playing.
