Thorn Lights Up The Garden in Liberty’s Season Opener Win
Sunday's game marks the first time that the Liberty have opened the season with a win since the 1999 campaign.
“It is great,” Thorn said of the game. “We just want to protect our home court. To get that first victory on the home court is not only a confidence boost, but it is exactly what we want to do.”
With her 28-point effort, Thorn joins the likes of Tamika Whitmore and Becky Hammon on the Liberty all-time single game bests list. Whitmore's 28-point game came during the 2002 season vs. the Mercury and Hammon's 28-point game happened twice, once in the 2003 season vs. the Rockers and again the following season against the Fever.
In addition to Thorn, New York had three players in double figures – forward Shameka Christon scored 14 with six rebounds, point guard Loree Moore scored 12 and dished out four assists, and forward Cathrine Kraayeveld posted 10 with eight rebounds.
Guard Ashley Battle and center Barbara Farris came off the bench for the Liberty to score three and eight points respectively.
“It took a long time to settle into the game, but I think once we did we started executing and finally started getting some stops,” said New York head coach Pat Coyle of the night. “This is what you are going to see with this team because of how young we are. We are going to be up, we are going to be down.”
Center Jessica Davenport made her WNBA debut in the starting line-up for the Liberty and finished the night with eight points, three rebounds and one assist.
Next up for the Liberty is Alana Beard and the Washington Mystics on Thursday, May 24 at 11:00AM in Madison Square Garden. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.nyliberty.com, The Garden Box Office or by calling 877-WNBA-TIX. For Liberty season ticket plans, call (212) 465-6073.
