Team Takes Active Role with Clinic Hosted by Teresa Weatherspoon
New York Liberty Celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day

February 1, 2002 - The New York Liberty will take an active role in National Girls and Women in Sports Day, taking place on February 6, 2002. Hosted by Team Captain and WNBA All-Star, Teresa Weatherspoon, a basketball clinic will be held at The Field House at Chelsea Piers beginning at 4:00 pm.

This year, the New York Liberty has partnered with Chelsea Piers and the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York to present the clinic to more than 100 girls from the New York metro-area. In attendance will be members of the Girl Scouts Manhattan troops and children from New York City after-school programs supported by Liberty Cheering for Children, a division of the Madison Square Garden Cheering for Children Foundation.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) was established by a Congressional resolution in 1986 to celebrate the achievements of girls and women in sports.

The first NGWSD was organized to honor Flo Hyman, the Olympic volleyball champion. Hyman died suddenly while playing in Japan in 1986 from Marfan Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that led to a faulty aorta.

NGWSD is celebrated throughout the 50 states, and is sponsored by five prominent national organizations: Girls Incorporated, Girl Scouts of the USA, National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, Women's Sports Foundation, and the YWCA of the U.S.A. Collectively, these five organizations reach more than 50 million girls and women.

"Every time a girl participates in any sport, any game, their confidence improves. Giving them the tools to succeed on the court helps them build the life tools they need off the court," said Weatherspoon. "I'm looking forward to having fun and hope to motivate these girls to be active and begin a lifetime of participation in sports."

The New York Liberty basketball team, beginning its sixth year of operation with the 2002 season, is part of Madison Square Garden, L.P. Cablevision Systems Corporation owns a controlling interest in the MSG L.P., which also include the New York Knicks (NBA), the New York Rangers (NHL), the Hartford Wolfpack (American Hockey League), the MSG Network, Fox Sports New York and the Madison Square Garden arena complex, located in the heart of the New York metropolitan area.
