Undefeated Liberty Face Defending Champion Shock in Battle of the Unbeatens

The New York Liberty continues to entertain and amaze the Madison Square Garden crowd at each home game this season, and now has found itself atop the WNBA standings with the best record (5-0).

The Liberty made WNBA history on Tuesday evening against the Fever as the first team to win in a match-up between undefeated teams with at least three wins. The opportunity to make League history again comes on Friday when New York hosts the defending WNBA champion Detroit Shock at 7:30PM. The Shock brings with them to Madison Square Garden, its own unbeaten streak of 4-0.

SCORING BARRAGE
The similarities between the Liberty and the Shock extend beyond their undefeated records. Both teams have plenty of scoring threats on the court.

Detroit has five different players who average double digits – Plenette Pierson (14.8ppg), Deanna Nolan (14.3 ppg), Swin Cash (14.0 ppg), Cheryl Ford (13.3 ppg) and Katie Smith (12.0 ppg).

New York has a balanced attack of its own with four players averaging double-digits – Erin Thorn (15ppg), Cathrine Kraayeveld (14ppg), Loree Moore (12ppg) and Shameka Christon (11ppg).

BRINGING OUT THE BEST
Three Liberty players have put in their best career performances against the Shock – Erin Thorn: Free throws made (6), free throws attempted (7), minutes (35) and assists (5); Cathrine Kraayeveld: Rebounds (12) and defensive rebounds (10); Ashley Battle: Rebounds (6), offensive rebounds (3), field goals attempted (14), three-point field goals attempted (6) and minutes (29).

RING BEARER
Liberty center Barbara Farris spent her first five WNBA seasons in a Shock uniform and was part of the 2003 squad that captured the WNBA Championship.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
The Long Ball: Led by guard Erin Thorn, the Liberty has three players ranked in the Top 5 overall of the WNBA in 3-point field goal percentage. Thorn (60%) boasts a slight lead on teammate Loree Moore (58%), while Cathrine Kraayeveld (50%) rounds out the top 5. Detroit’s Deanna Nolan (50%) is tied with Kraayeveld for fifth place.

On the Glass: Kraayeveld’s 13 boards at Minnesota on June 1st are the season best for the Liberty, while Cheryl Ford, Detroit’s biggest inside presence, pulled down 14 in the Shock’s last game against Houston on June 2nd.
