Overseas Update - 2/24

This week in France, Leilani Mitchell and her team Arras Pays d’Artois had a busy week with two games. On February 16, Arras lost to Villeneuve 72-62. Leilani scored 10 points and dished out 5 assists in the loss. Three days later, they had a better result as they won in French league play. Arras defeated Minnesota Lynx Forward Kristen Mann and Charleville 82-70. Leilani contributed 6 points and 6 assists in the game. She is now averaging 12.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 4 assists in 35.6 minutes of play.

Essence Carson and SEAT Lami Ved Gyor came up short this week in Hungary as they were defeated by Connecticut Sun forward Kelsey Griffin 99-67. Essence continued to come back strong adding 20 points.

Janel McCarville had a great week after she was named Player of the Week in the Italian League following her play last week. She and her team Famila Schio continued their success this weekend by defeating Vomero NA 89-45. Janel put up 15 points and 8 rebounds in 24 minutes of play as Schio stays atop the Italian League at 15-1. Janel is averaging 11.3 points and 8.2 rebounds in 26.3 minutes of play.

Sidney Spencer and her team Priolo also got a big win in Italy this week as they edged out Lucca 56-51. Sidney scored 12 points in the win. She is averaging 11.6 points and 4.3 rebounds in 27 minutes of play.

In Israel, Kia Vaughn and Elitzur Ramla continued their winning ways by defeating Elitzur Holon, 85-71. Ramla now holds a 2-0 lead for the series in Round One of playoffs. Kia is playing with Seattle Storm’s Le’Coe Willigham and Tanisha Wright and Minnesota’s Charde Houston. In the win, Kia added 11 points and 10 rebounds. She is currently averaging 18.3 points and 9.9 rebounds in 29.9 minutes per game. Elitzur Ramla also defeated Sony Athinaikos in Eurocup play on Thursday evening, 74-59.

In Russia, Cappie Pondexter and UMMC Ekaterinburg dominated Spartak SP 68-45 to stay undefeated in Russian League play at 15-0. Jennifer Lacy of the Tulsa Shock plays for Spartak SP. UMMC also got a big win in Euroleague Quarterfinal play by beating Cras Taranto of Italy, 68-51. Cappie contributed 11 points and 9 rebounds in 31 minutes of play.

Cappie is playing with many familiar names to the W. Her teammates consist of Sandrine Gruda of the Connecticut Sun, Svetlana Abrosimova of the Seattle Storm, and Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks. Other familiar names are Deanna Nolan who last played in the WNBA for the Detroit Shock and Maria Stepanova who last played for the Phoenix Mercury. UMMC will face fourth ranked Dynamo Kursk next week.

Plenette Pierson and Tarsus Bld were successful this week in Turkish league play as they defeated Alanya Bld 74-56. Tarsus maintains their spot at third in the league. Plenette scored 10 points and 7 rebounds in the win. She averages 18.1 points and 8.1 rebounds in 29.3 minutes of play. Plenette is playing with Dominique Canty of the Chicago Sky and Shyra Ely.
