Continuing To Marvel

Riding high from her most successful (and healthy) season in the WNBA, New York Liberty center Janel McCarville recently completed a stint with the U.S. women’s Select Team in the 2007 FIBA World League Tournament in All-Star fashion. McCarville proved to be the secret weapon in the U.S. squad’s arsenal during its time in Ekaterinburg, Russia, as the Americans charged through the tournament behind her play. The U.S. made a run at the League title against one of Europe’s premiere professional clubs, however fell short in the championship game, despite a game-high 18-point, 9-rebound performance from McCarville.

The WNBA’s 2007 Most Improved Player led the U.S. in blocks and steals three times, rebounds twice and scoring once in the Tournament – and turned in an overall average of 12.6 points and a team-high 9.2 rebounds. McCarville was the second leading rebounder throughout the Tournament and was one of the Top 20 scorers, as well.

She amassed a team-high (with the Phoenix Mercury’s All-Star Diana Taurasi) eight steals through five games. After coming off the bench in the team’s second match of the Tournament to net 15 points and pull down 10 boards, McCarville entered the starting line-up.

When asked about the impression she made on the international basketball landscape after her recent performances with the U.S. squad, McCarville said, “I hope my name is in there somewhere, but I know there's a lot of great post players in USA Basketball. I know I have my work cut out for me to be up there with them.”

“It's just a start,” she added.
