The New York Liberty return home to take on Tina Charles and the Connecticut Sun on Saturday, August 3rd, at 6:00pm ET at the Prudential Center! The Liberty (8-11) return to the Prudential Center with a lot to be excited about. On July 31st the Liberty defeated the Washington Mystics on the road, 88-78, behind a massive interior effort to start the second half of the season off with a bang. Kara Braxton looked revived, scoring the teams first 5 baskets and connecting on her first 10 shots. She finished with 22 points on 11-14 shooting and 8 rebounds in just 23 minutes. Kelsey Bone shined again with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds in only 16 minutes of play! Plenette Pierson provided 16 points and 7 rebounds in undersized post play. Cappie Pondexter led the guards with 19 points and facilitated for the team with 9 assists. New York held Washington to just 36% shooting from the field and 19% shooting from three. The Liberty outrebounded the Mystics 43-34 and dished 22 assists as a team. Rookie Kamiko Williams received a starting nod in Wednesday’s game.

The Connecticut Sun (5-12) began their second half of the season with a win, too. They pulled out a 70-64 win against the Indiana Fever on August 1st. The Sun were able to overcome a 16-point third quarter deficit behind 22 points and 12 rebounds from Tina Charles. Allison Hightower contributed 12 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the game. Mistie Bass scored 12 points and Tan White added 10 points. The Sun are looking healthier these days, with their entire roster playing except for Kara Lawson.

New York and Connecticut are 1-1 in this season’s series. They last matched up on June 14th at the Prudential Center where the Liberty were victorious, 78-68. Cappie Pondexter led all scorers with 20 points and added 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Leilani Mitchell scored 16 points, snagged 9 rebounds, and dished 5 assists while knocking down 4 threes in the game. Kara Braxton had a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds. Katie Smith scored 10 points. Allison Hightower and Kara Braxton led Connecticut with 16 and 17 points, respectively. Tina Charles was held to just 7 points on tough 3-17 shooting from the field.

Keys To The Game:

More BIGS!
This isn’t and can’t just be the Cappie show. As the Bigs go, so do the Liberty’s chances of success. The big body Bigs like Kara Braxton and Kelsey Bone provide balance to the Liberty offense. They control the tempo of the game with their rebounding. They control the toughness of the team with their physicality. They make Cappie’s job easier. If Braxton and Bone can keep it up, the Liberty are a much better team in the second half of the season.

Interior Defense
It will take multiple players and big effort to slow down Tina Charles. At the moment Tina is still carrying the troubled Sun. The Liberty have the size and potential to disrupt her; it is a matter of concentration.
