The New York Liberty visit the Washington Mystics in the final game of the season on Sunday, September 15th, at 4:00pm ET.

The Liberty enter weekend play with a record of (11-21). New York was eliminated from playoff contention after an 80-76 loss at home to the Phoenix Mercury on September 10th. The Liberty played without Cappie Pondexter who nursed a bruised knee. Sunday’s game will mark the final game in the career of seven-time All-Star, 3-time Olympic gold medalist, 2-time WNBA champion, and women’s professional basketball’s number one all time leading scorer, Katie Smith.

The Washington Mystics (15-17) clinched a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 69-67 win on the road over the Indiana Fever on September 10th. Kia Vaughn lead the Mystics with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Ivory Latta also contributed 15 points to go along with 4 assists. The Mystics outrebounded Indiana, 43-32.

The last time New York and Washington matched up was on August 16th where the Mystics were victorious, 66-57, at the Prudential Center. The Mystics enjoyed a 21-13 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to close out the win over the Liberty. Matee Ajavon boasted a stat line of 16 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds. Washington had four players score in double digits. Katie Smith led New York with 14 points. Cappie Pondexter managed 10 points but struggled with 4-13 shooting.

Keys To The Game

Key in on Ajavon.
Matee Ajavon has played very well against the Liberty. She’s been able to make good decisions to create her own shot and create for others in addition to contributing solid rebounding. Guarding her is a full time job- there are no moments on the court where she is not a threat. Avoid letting her beat the first line of defense (keep her in front).

Give Katie the rock!
Katie Smith scored 17 points in a heroic effort to lead the Liberty in a tight battle with Phoenix. Any true basketball fan with a heart can certainly hope for Katie Smith to go out with a bang and finish her career with another solid showing. Give Katie the rock!
