NEW YORK, NY – April 26, 2012 - The New York Liberty has named Norm Ellenberger as assistant coach to Head Coach and General Manager John Whisenant’s staff.

The 2012 WNBA season reunites Norm “Stormin’ Norman” Ellenberger with Whisenant after their coaching days together at the University of New Mexico. Ellenberger was the Lobo head coach from 1972-79, where he led the squad to two Western Athletic Conference titles (’74 and ’78) and earned two NCAA Tournament invitations—the first for the University of New Mexico.

“With a career spanning nearly 50 years, Norm brings with him extensive coaching experience. We are fortunate to have such a seasoned professional join our coaching staff and we are confident that he will play an important role in helping us in our quest to win the WNBA Championship,” said Whisenant.

Ellenberger brings over 47 years of coaching experience to the Liberty. The offensive strategist’s career includes stints with Monmouth College and the University of Texas-El Paso where he had a 134-62 coaching record. He spent over a decade at the University of Indiana (’90-00) under head coaching legend Bobby Knight and most recently was on the Chicago Bulls coaching staff.
