Liberty Look For Advantage Over Mystics

The New York Liberty host the Washington Mystics on Friday, August 16th, at 7:30pm ET at the Prudential Center and look to establish tie-breaking advantage by tallying their third win in the four-game regular season series.

The Liberty (10-13) return from an 88-82 victory over the Dream in Atlanta on August 11th. Four Liberty players recorded double-digit scoring in the game. Cappie Pondexter dominated recording big-time numbers: 33 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds. The Liberty outrebounded the Dream 43-30.

New York recently picked up Delisha Milton-Jones from the San Antonio Silver Stars. Milton-Jones will be available for this Friday’s game vs. the Mystics.

The Mystics (11-13) come off of a 74-63 win over the Connecticut Sun in Washington on August 11th. The Mystics shot well connecting at 41% from the field and 53% from three. Forward Crystal Langhorne led the team with 18 points and 9 rebounds while guard Ivory Latta contributed 14 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds in the game.

New York is 2-0 against Washington this season and last matched up on August 6th when the Liberty defeated the Mystics 93-88 at the Prudential Center. After a rough third quarter in which the Mystics outscored the Liberty 25-17, New York battled back with a 31-17 fourth quarter effort to secure a victory at home. Crystal Langhorne scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while shooting an impressive 10-14 from the field. Cappie Pondexter scored 21 points and facilitated the offense with 8 assists. Alex Montgomery exploded off of the bench and boosted the team with 21 points. Kara Braxton pumped out 16 points and Plenette Pierson played a balanced game adding 8 points, 10 assists, and 6 rebounds.

Keys To The Game:

Box Out!

The Liberty allowed the Mystics 14 offensive rebounds in their last matchup. The smaller Mystics squad is feisty and quick to the glass. Therefore, Liberty players should stay locked in on the mental and physical task of finding a player and boxing that player out, every single time.

Balanced Scoring Options.

The Liberty find success when multiple players get in on the scoring action. It doesn’t have to be a monster game from Alex Montgomery or another role player each night; rather, a more reliable option is to do it by committee. Guards not named Cappie Pondexter need to keep finding different combinations of players to fill the stat sheet each game.
