Five Things To Look Forward To In May

Welcome to NYLiberty.com's new monthly feature, offering you five things to look forward to over the course of the next 31 days.

  1. Training Camp Opens
On Sunday, May 17, the Madison Square Garden Training Center will open its doors to welcome in the Liberty players, coaching staff and management to get the wheels in motion for the highly anticipated 13th season. Before hitting the hardwood, the 13 players will endure physicals and then are turned over to the coaching staff to get down to business and prepare for the pre-season schedule.

  2. 4th Annual "School Day" Game
Speaking of that pre-season schedule, it will tip-off at 11:00 a.m. with this matinee match-up on Thursday, May 21 at Madison Square Garden and will be the first chance for fans to see the Liberty in action in 2009. New York will face off against Conference foe, the Washington Mystics, whom was swept 3-0 in the 2008 regular season series. For the fourth consecutive year, The Garden will play the role of host of "School Day," offering a fun, affordable and educational outing for local schools and community groups. This won't be your average school field trip! We offer educational playbooks for your group, an exciting and engaging game of basketball and also a special post-game treat, a Q&A session featuring two Liberty players. What more could you ask for on a Thursday morning? Tickets start at $10, click here to get on board now!

  3. Media Day
For those of you who might not be familiar with this annual routine around the pro ranks, Media Day is the first opportunity for members of the press to speak with the players, coaches and management about the start of the upcoming season. Following a practice day, the whole team does a "speed dating" type session with the press to talk about their off-season, their goals for the summer and everything in between. But the action doesn't stop there for the team. The players and coaches spend the entire afternoon getting their photos taken (headshots and the like), conducting sit-down interviews for MSG Network, good ol'  NYLiberty.com, NBA Entertainment and ESPN; and of course they participate in the various video shoots that you see every game on Gardenvision.

  4. Dance Teams Roster Announcement
Each spring, our entertainment marketing team puts out a call-to-action for dancers from across the tri-state area looking to be a part of three of the hottest summer acts in New York City. Of course, we're referring to the Liberty Torch Patrol, Lil' Torches and Timeless Torches - our three amazingly talented co-ed dance and cheer teams. The grueling audition process soon follows and the wait will finally be over this month when we unveil the rosters for the three teams you'll see all summer long tearing it up on The Garden floor. Until that moment comes, check out last season's squads.

  5. Playoff Re-Match
No rest for the weary. Following the pre-season home opener, the Liberty will hit the road for a game against the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun on Friday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. Our faithful fan base will recall that the last time we saw these two teams square off it was in Game Three of the 2008 Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. In that game, rookie Essence Carson's team-high 15 points pushed No. 3 ranked New York over No. 2 Connecticut to advance to the next round. This pre-season showdown will not be televised, so pack the family in the car and head on up I-95 for a Friday night in Uncasville to root on the Libs! Of course, the next time the Liberty will see the Sun will be on Opening Day at The Garden, Sunday, June 7 at 4:00 p.m.

We hope to see you this month!
