Six Players Signed To Training Camp Contracts

NEW YORK, NY - April 23 - The New York Liberty announced today that guards Brandie Hoskins and Laine Selwyn, forwards Tamara James and April Phillips and centers Katie Mattera and Erica Williamson have been signed to Training Camp contracts. As per team policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Mattera, a 27-year-old 6-8 center, has spent six seasons in the WNBA. She began her professional career in San Antonio when she was acquired in a draft day trade, after being originally selected by the Connecticut Sun as the No. 8 overall pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft. She has played for the Detroit Shock (2007), Atlanta Dream (2008), San Antonio Silver Stars and Chicago Sky (2009), and owns a 6.7 ppg and 4.7 rpg career average through 150 games. This past off-season, she assisted Henan in advancing to the in the Chinese League Finals while averaging 24.4 ppg.

Hoskins, a 24-year-old 5-9 guard, was originally drafted as the No. 33 overall pick by the Seattle Storm in the 2007 WNBA Draft, however missed the 2007 season due to injury. A three-time All-Big Ten honoree, she graduated from Ohio State averaging 12.3 ppg and 4.0 apg. She recently played overseas in the Ukraine.

James, a 25-year-old 5-10 forward, spent the 2006-2007 WNBA seasons with the Washington Mystics while appearing in 52 games with nine starts and averaging 4.1 ppg and 1.3 rpg. Originally selected by the Mystics as the No. 8 overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft, she competed in the Israeli League recently for Raanana Hertzeliya and averaged 18.1 ppg, 7.7 rpg and 3.0 apg in 15 games.

Phillips, a 22-year-old 6-0 forward, recently completed her collegiate career at Xavier by helping the Lady Musketeers capture its second Atlantic-10 Conference title in two years. She averaged 8.6 ppg, 6.3 rpg through 34 games with 34 starts this past season.

Selwyn, a 28-year-old 5-8 guard born in Brooklyn, NY, recently competed for A.S. Ramat Hasharon Electra in the Israeli League, while averaging 11.4 ppg, 4.9 apg and 1.8 spg. During her collegiate career at Pittsburgh, she averaged 16.6 ppg, 5.9 apg and 6.2 rpg in her senior season in 2003.

Williamson, a 21-year-old 6-4 center, wrapped her final season at Notre Dame this year ranked as one of the top 10 shot blockers in the program’s history with 126 total. In 34 games with nine starts, she averaged 4.6 ppg and 2.7 rpg as a senior.

New York will open its Training Camp on Sunday, April 25 at the Madison Square Garden Training Center in Tarrytown, NY.
