New York Liberty Celebrates Black History Month

Weatherspoon
February 1, 2002 - New York Liberty team captain and WNBA All-Star Teresa Weatherspoon will help tip-off celebrations for Black History Month on February 5, as part of the Liberty Cheering for Children after school commitment. Weatherspoon will host a discussion with more than 50 after school students from PS 194 in Manhattan as part of a program called Promote the Quote. The program will introduce several quotes from Martin Luther King and provide a forum to discuss the ideals he embodied. The event will tip-off at 4:30 pm at the school, located at 244 West 144th Street in Manhattan.

"I grew up with the words of Dr. King helping to shape my life. My whole family, my brothers, uncles, parents all taught me from a very young age how important it was not only to be tolerant of all different kinds of people, but how to reach out across the barriers we've all built," describes Weatherspoon. "I can only hope by discussing some of his great visions, we can build a better community for kids today."

While the event on February 5th focuses on Martin Luther King, the Liberty will continue to celebrate Black History Month throughout February. Stay logged on to www.nyliberty.com for insights from many of the Liberty players.
