New York, July 5, 2004 – New York Liberty Senior Vice President and General Manager Carol Blazejowski announced today that former Washington Mystics Head Coach, Marianne Stanley, has been named assistant coach for the New York Liberty.

Prior to being named Head Coach of the Mystics (2002-2003) she was the team’s assistant (2001). Stanley was also an assistant under Michael Cooper for the Los Angeles Sparks, where she helped guide the team to the playoffs during the 2000 season.

At the young age of 22, Stanley began her career in 1976 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA and was promoted to Head Coach the following year. In her first season at the helm, she became the youngest NCAA Division I women’s basketball coach to capture a national championship (AIAW). She went on to win two AIAW Championships in her first three seasons before capturing the NCAA Championship in 1985. In ten seasons at ODU, Stanley compiled an impressive 269-59 record and sustained a top ten ranking throughout her tenure.

Stanley has also enjoyed coaching stints at such programs as Berkeley (1996-2000), Stanford (1995-96), the University of Southern California (USC, 1989-1993) and Pennsylvania (1987-1989).

As a two-time All-American point guard, Stanley led Immaculata College to four consecutive AIAW National Championship games (1972-1976) and two consecutive AIAW National Championship Titles (1973-74).

As per team policy, conditions of the contract are not released.

The New York Liberty basketball team, in its eighth year of operation with the 2004 season, is part of the Madison Square Garden, L.P. Cablevision Systems Corporation owns a controlling interest in the MSG L.P., which also include the New York Knicks (NBA), the New York Rangers (NHL), the Hartford Wolfpack (American Hockey League), the MSG Network, Fox Sports New York and the Madison Square Garden arena complex, located in the heart of the New York metropolitan area.
