Season in Review: Sherill Baker

It's hard to believe, but the Liberty is now well into its 2006 off-season. The 10th Anniversary came and went this summer, and the team has parted ways as players have headed off to their respective off-season locations. We know you miss the team as much as we do, so join us as we take a look back at how some of your favorite Liberty players fared this season. First up: Sherill Baker.

  • And with the 12th overall pick... The New York Liberty selected Sherill Baker from the University of Georgia. After averaging 12.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 3.0 assists during her four years at UGA, the Liberty made Baker its first pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft. New York saw speed in the Stone Mountain, GA native: Baker broke both single season and career steals records for both Georgia and the SEC.

  • Went from start to finish. Baker played in all 34 games of her rookie campaign. She was one of just five Liberty players to appear in all 34 regular season games in 2006.

  • Made an immediate impact. Baker contributed to the team all season long. She finished her rookie year averaging 7.4 ppg, 1.65 rpg, and 1.35 spg.

  • Picked up where she left off in college. Baker was known for her defensive play-making ability at Georgia, making her mark as the school's all-time steal leader. She picked up with the Liberty right where she left off with the Lady Bulldogs. Baker's 1.35 spg was second on the team this season, finishing just behind point guard Loree Moore (1.79 spg). She also ranked 16th in the WNBA in total steals (46).

  • Was among the best in her class. Baker held her own compared to her fellow 2006 draft picks. She finished the season ranked second amongst all rookies in steals (1.35 rpg). Baker was also sixth amongst first-year players in scoring (7.4 ppg) and eighth in minutes (18.3 mpg).

  • Set the bar high for next year. Baker set a season and career high of 18 points against the Shock on June 1. She grabbed a personal best five rebounds on three different ocassions. Five stands as her career high for steals heading into next season. Can she top that in 2007?
