A Letter to Our Fans

As we gear up for our 10th anniversary season, I wanted to ensure that as a fan of the New York Liberty and a member of our family, we include you in our off-season team update.

The second decade of the Liberty has begun to take on a considerably different look. Therefore, I felt it was important to advise you of my plans and what you can expect this upcoming season.

For years, this team has been a picture of excellence on the court, posting the third highest number of wins in WNBA history. We have piled up playoff appearances (seven in nine years), four trips to the WNBA Finals, have had many representatives in the WNBA All-Star Game and competed at the highest level of women’s professional basketball.

As proud as we are of our past, our goal continues to be to bring New York the WNBA Championship, a prize that has so far eluded us. As we look at the landscape of the WNBA, it is clear that the environment is evolving, becoming a much more athletic, faster-paced and versatile game. As with all sports teams, in every league, our responsibility is to ensure that our assets ideally match the challenges we face, and at some point with every franchise, that means change. We will have our nucleus - Becky Hammon, Shameka Christon and Cathrine Kraayeveld - and we are working towards surrounding them with younger, faster, more athletic players that will grow in our system and be successful for the long term.

For the past two seasons, Shameka Christon has been a patient understudy and now is her time to shine. We are excited about the potential of Cathrine Kraayeveld, an eager, hungry and physical post presence with three point shooting range. We have also bulked up our front line by acquiring Kelly Schumacher from the Indiana Fever and signing free agent Barb Farris. Both of these players bring us additional size, skill and toughness in the paint along with experience. In addition to Schumacher and Farris, we have added free agent signee Iciss Tillis, a 6’ 5” athletic post player who can also step out and shoot the three. In the back court, Loree Moore will be coming into training camp healthy and on the international front, we have a few foreign prospects that we are looking at very closely. Finally, with our number 12 pick in this year’s draft, we plan to select the most athletic player available or acquire a marquee player via trade.

We are excited and enthusiastic about a new decade for the Liberty, one in which we will be committed to ensuring our assets meet the challenge ahead of us. Above all, as has been the case over these last nine seasons, we appreciate your support and do not take it for granted. As some of the most knowledgeable and passionate fans in the entire league, we are hopeful that you will embrace our new look team and be patient as we grow together into a successful franchise about which we can all be proud. This season, it’s about Raising The Game!
