Hammon to Train with National Team
The USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team Committee is inviting an elite group of players to participate in the three different camps in the coming months. All the players involved will be competing for the 12 roster positions on the 2006 World Championship Team. The sessions, along with a portion of the upcoming WNBA season, will give the Committee ample chance to evaluate the players and determine who will represent the U.S. in its quest for the World Championship.
Hammon will compete in the first leg of the European Tour, which opens its training Thursday, March 2 and will go through the weekend in Sopron, Hungary. The USA will play its first game on March 6 against MKB Euroleasing Sopron. The team will then wrap up with two games against Lotos Gdynia in Poland on March 8 and 9.
The Liberty All-Star will be in grand company. She will be joined on the first European Tour by the following WNBA stars: Alana Beard, Sue Bird, Kara Braxton, Swin Cash, Kara Lawson, Kristen Mann, Chasity Melvin, DeLisha Milton-Jones, Nicole Ohlde, Nicole Powell, Katie Smith and Diana Taurasi.
The second session will be held March 17 - 24 in France and Hungary. The third training camp will be held March 31 - April 12 in Boston and Australia. USA Basketball will announce the rosters for the other camps prior to the start of each.
Following the conclusion of the WNBA season, USA Basketball will reconvene for a final training camp before setting off for Brazil to defend its World Championship. The 15th FIBA World Championship will be held September 12-23 in Brazil. The U.S. is the defending World Champion and is riding a 19 game winning streak. USA Basketball is 80-20 all-time in World Championship competition and has won seven gold medals, along with one each of silver and bronze.
