2009 In Review: Essence Carson

How those summer months breeze by and another Liberty season is in the books again. As the weather transitions into fall and players begin to part ways en route to off-season endeavors, NYLiberty.com is handing in its season homework – a final report, which takes a look back at how each member of the team faired in the franchise's 13th summer. Today’s chapter of the report looks at guard Essence Carson.

THE SKINNY: Carson appeared in all 34 regular season games. With 34 starts, she was the only Liberty player to accomplish that feat this summer. She scored in double figures 17 times; 15 of those were 10-plus point games and two were 20-plus point games. Carson led New York in scoring six times (three more than 2008) and rebounds three times (two more than last season).

ON THE RISE: Carson wrapped the 2009 campaign, averaging a career-best 10.0 points per game, up 3.4 from her rookie season and was the team's third leading scorer. She also averaged 6.3 more minutes per game this summer (25.3) and shot her best .917-percent from the charity stripe.

BREAKOUT GAME: It was the last road trip of the season and the Liberty trailed the Shock by 10 points at half-time in The Palace of Auburn Hills. Carson helped New York stage a fourth-quarter comeback,as the visitors scored 33 points in the final frame. With six seconds to go, the second year-guard sunk a three-pointer to tie the score at 84 and sent the game into overtime. Carson finished with a career-high 28 points.
