Coaches’ Corner section 4

Coaches are just like teachers in a classroom, but their classroom is the basketball court. You must know how to connect with your players to get them to understand the concepts and skills that you are teaching them. Here are a couple of techniques to help you coach your players better.

10 TEACHING TECHNIQUES FOR COACHES

1. Speak clearly and concisely.
2. Repeat key words and skills.
3. Review previously learned skills before progressing to new ones.
4. Use constructive criticism.
5. Try to create as many opportunities for success as possible.
6. Do not overuse your whistle.
7. Demand eye contact.
8. Reward the players when possible.
9. Lead by example.
10. Be organized, thorough and confident.

QUICK TIP

When you present a demonstration to your team, always be sure to do it slowly enough to be watched. If you run though it too quickly, kids can’t take in all of the movements and the forms needed to be successful. Once the players understand it, demonstrate it at game tempo.
