On August 10, 2006, New York Liberty stars Becky Hammon and Shameka Christon visited the “Play and Learn Center” at the Life Shelter in lower Manhattan.

The Liberty started a relationship with the Life Shelter a few weeks ago when several players renovated and then unveiled the WNBA Cares “Learn and Play Center.” On this visit, Hammon and Christon distributed the large amount of school supplies collected at the Liberty School Supply Drive held prior to the August 8 game.

Liberty fans overwhelmingly showed their community support by donating hundreds of notebooks, pens, pencils, scissors, and rulers. Hammon and Christon passed out team book bags filled with these supplies.

The players also signed autographs, shared their favorite school memories and took the time to emphasize the importance of education.
