Mystics-Sky Preview

The Chicago Sky's Sylvia Fowles is putting up MVP-type numbers, but it may not be enough to get her team into the playoffs.

After a heartbreaking loss in their last game, Fowles and the Sky host the last-place Washington Mystics on Friday night, trying to sweep the season series for the first time.

With seven games remaining, Chicago (12-15) fell two games behind Atlanta for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with an 83-80 loss to the Dream on Tuesday.

Fowles gave the Sky an 80-79 lead with 6.3 seconds left, but Michelle Snow fouled Atlanta's Angel McCoughtry on the next possession and she made the go-ahead free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining.

Chicago, which won on the road in its previous two games, has lost two straight home games and four of five.

Fowles has 13 turnovers in the last two games - the Sky had 25 on Tuesday - but otherwise continues to put up impressive numbers. She's scored at least 20 points in four straight games and has posted double-doubles in six in a row.

Her surge over the last month has put her third in the WNBA in scoring (20.3 ppg) and second in rebounding (10.1 rpg).

There's no reason to believe she will cool off against the Mystics, who are trying to snap a six-game losing streak. Fowles has averaged 27.3 points in the season series and has recorded a double-double in each of the last two meetings.

Chicago has won all three games against Washington this year, including a 71-70 victory last Saturday.

The Mystics (5-21) are coming off another tough loss after they fell 86-82 in overtime to Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Washington, which has lost 11 of 13, rallied from a 53-41 deficit in the third quarter only to come up short in the extra period.

Six of the Mystics' last 11 defeats have been by five points or fewer.

"It's been the same story pretty much all season, not pulling out games toward the end," forward Nicky Anosike said. "I keep saying we're going to turn it around, but it's either now or never."

Crystal Langhorne scored 28 points but her potential go-ahead basket with 24.9 seconds left in regulation was blocked, and she didn't attempt a shot in overtime until a basket with 5.1 seconds remaining.

Washington hasn't lost seven in a row since a nine-game losing streak to close the 2008 season.

The Mystics have dropped five straight to the Sky.

Prince, Fowles lead Sky to 80-67 win over Mystics

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) Epiphanny Prince had 18 points and Sylvia Fowles scored 14 - all in the second half - and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Chicago Sky to an 80-67 victory over the Washington Mystics on Friday night.

Tamera Young added 12 points for Chicago (13-15), which moved 1 1/2 games behind fourth-place Atlanta in the Eastern Conference.

Crystal Langhorne scored 19 points, Kelly Miller had 13 and Matee Ajavon added 12 for the Mystics (5-22), who have lost seven straight.

Fowles, limited to 4:57 of playing time in the first half due to early foul trouble, dominated play in the second half as Chicago pulled away from a 49-49 tie midway through the third quarter.

The Sky led 61-55 entering the final period but pushed the margin to 18 with 5:06 to play. They never led the lead slip under double digits the rest of the way

Chicago led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter before Washington's 11-0 run over a 4-minute span cut the Sky's lead to single digits.

Prince hit a jumper with 31 seconds left and followed with a 3 pointer as the Sky opened a 45-38 lead at the break.

The Mystics staged another run early in the third quarter, tying the game at 49-all on Ajavon's bank shot with 4 1/2 minutes remaining. Fowles scored eight points to restore Chicago's lead to six entering the fourth.

Washington was scheduled to return home for a Sunday game with Phoenix. But the impending arrival of Hurricane Irene could force postponement of that game.

Chicago hosts New York on Sunday and the Liberty were on hand to watch Friday's game after leaving New York ahead of the hurricane.
