Silver Stars-Mercury Preview

With the Western Conference standings so tightly bunched, the Phoenix Mercury know they have to continue to protect their home court.

The San Antonio Silver Stars will need to get results on the road to keep pace.

Phoenix looks to build on the second-largest comeback in franchise history and win its fourth in a row at home Saturday night as it faces the Silver Stars, who open a critical three-game trip.

Trailing conference-leading Minnesota by 4 1/2 games, the Mercury (14-10) are just ahead of San Antonio (13-11), with Seattle (13-12) and Los Angeles (10-14) not far behind.

Phoenix moved ahead of the Silver Stars on Tuesday with an 81-79 victory over the Storm. With league-leading scorer Diana Taurasi scoring nine of her 24 points in the final 8:52, including a driving shot with 6.3 seconds left, the Mercury completed a rally from 18 down in the first half.

"It's crunch time now," said Taurasi, who has reached 20 points in a season-best six straight games. "If you look at the West standings, two through five, one day you can be in second and the next day you could be in fourth. Especially the games at home, we really have to take care of."

While the Mercury continue a stretch of six of seven at home, the Silver Stars travel to Seattle and Minnesota after visiting Phoenix.

San Antonio has dropped six of eight, falling 65-63 home to Indiana on Tuesday.

"Right now, we've kind of put ourselves in a position where we have to win these next few games on the road," forward Sophia Young said. "I think we're a pretty good matchup with the Mercury."

In three meetings with Phoenix in 2011, San Antonio has scored 100.3 points per game - 22.0 more than its season average - while winning twice. The Mercury, the league's highest-scoring team with 90.9 points a contest, averaged 98.3 and 49.0 percent shooting in those matchups.

Penny Taylor is scoring 19.7 points per game against the Silver Stars in 2011, while Candice Dupree has contributed 18.3 points and 13.0 rebounds - 5.1 above her season average for boards.

"Phoenix obviously presents a very talented team from an offensive standpoint ... ," coach Dan Hughes said. "... At the same time, we want to be attacking."

With rookie Danielle Adams (14.3 points, 4.6 rebounds) out with a sprained right foot, the Silver Stars will likely need a big effort from All-Star point guard Becky Hammon, who will try to bounce back from a six-point effort Tuesday.

Hammon, averaging 27.7 points and 7.7 assists versus Phoenix this season, scored 33 points and hit seven 3-pointers in the last matchup - a 102-91 Silver Stars home win July 28.

Young scored 26 points as San Antonio rallied from 14 down at halftime to win 101-99 on June 17, the teams' only matchup in Phoenix in 2011.

The clubs' final regular-season meeting is Sept. 1 in San Antonio.

Taylor rallies Mercury past Silver Stars

PHOENIX (AP) Penny Taylor scored 16 of her 28 points in the fourth quarter and the Phoenix Mercury rallied to beat the San Antonio Silver Stars 87-81 on Saturday night.

Candice Dupree had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and DeWanna Bonner added 13 points for the Mercury, who won for the fourth time in five games.

The Mercury were without guard Diana Taurasi, who was a game-time scratch with back spasms.

Becky Hammon had 20 points and 10 assists, Ruth Riley had 16 points and Scholanda Robinson added 15 for the Silver Stars, who have dropped three straight and four of their last five.

Dupree scored seven points to key a 14-2 run that rallied the Mercury from a 52-45 deficit to a 59-54 lead with 1:41 left in the third quarter. Phoenix led the rest of the way.

Taylor made six straight free-throw attempts in the closing minute and matched a career high with a 13-for-13 performance from the line.

Hammon scored 11 first-half points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to help the Silver Stars open a 41-38 lead.
