Sparks-Sky Preview

The Chicago Sky managed to keep their losing streak brief by knocking off the league's worst team. They're hoping a matchup with another struggling foe will help them get back to .500.

The Sky will try to accomplish that Saturday night by handing the Los Angeles Sparks a season high-tying fifth straight defeat.

Chicago (9-10) avoided a third consecutive loss Thursday with a 64-55 victory at Tulsa. The Sky trailed by two points after being held to seven in the third quarter but would outscore the woeful Shock 18-7 in the fourth.

"In the end, we didn't want to lose," center Sylvia Fowles said. "We just regrouped and locked in as a team."

Fowles, averaging 19.9 points, was held to 14 for the second consecutive game after scoring at least 20 in four straight. Rookie guard Courtney Vandersloot, though, shined with zero turnovers and 12 points.

"I thought Courtney Vandersloot was huge for us," coach Pokey Chatman said. "She didn't turn it over; she kept the ball in her hand about 6 1/2 minutes in the fourth quarter. She got a couple of baskets and made the right passes, and she looked very confident out there."

The Sparks, meanwhile, haven't looked as steady on defense after winning their first two games under coach Joe Bryant following Jennifer Gillom's dismissal. They gave up 74 points in each of those contests but have allowed an average of 85.5 while losing their four subsequent games.

Gillom was fired July 10 after the team started 0-5 on a seven-game road trip.

Los Angeles (6-10) is coming off an 89-80 loss in Atlanta on Thursday, getting outrebounded 46-29 and outscored 22-13 on second-chance points. The Sparks trailed by three with 5:15 remaining before allowing the Dream to take command.

"We played better, but it still was not enough," said Ticha Penicheiro, who recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 assists. "We still have to figure out a way to win basketball games. We're still not rebounding well."

Los Angeles was outrebounded 39-23 during an 80-68 victory in Chicago last July but won the rematch 82-77 at Staples Center on Aug. 4 to help deny the Sky their first playoff berth. Each team also posted a home win in the 2009 season series after the Sparks had won five of the first six meetings.

Sparks All-Star forward Candace Parker, a native of nearby Naperville, Ill., will likely miss her third straight matchup with the Sky as she recovers from a knee injury. She sat out most of last season while recovering from surgery on her left shoulder.

Milton-Jones helps Sparks hold off Sky

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) DeLisha Milton-Jones scored 19 points and made a pair of clinching free throws as the Los Angeles Sparks held off a second-half comeback to beat the Chicago Sky 88-84 on Saturday night.

The Sky had closed within two points in the final minute, but Milton-Jones' free throws with 10.6 seconds left gave the Sparks an 86-82 lead.

Four teammates also hit double figure as Los Angeles (7-10) snapped a four-game losing streak.

Chicago (9-11) nearly erased a 20-point deficit behind 12 second-half points from Epiphanny Prince and 10 from Sylvia Fowles. Both finished with 16 points, while Erin Thorn scored 17 off the bench.

Tina Thompson had 14 points for Los Angeles and Jantel Lavender added 13. Kristi Toliver chipped in 12.

The Sparks used a 23-7 run in the final 6:57 of the first half to open a 51-36 lead. Thompson had two early 3-pointers, but had reduced minutes after collecting three first-quarter fouls.

Los Angeles pushed the lead to 20 in the third quarter following Toliver's two free throws. Chicago cut it to 68-66 as Thorn hit consecutive 3-pointers, but Los Angeles extended the lead before one final push trimmed it to 84-82 with 20 seconds left on Thorn's fifth 3-pointer.

The Sparks won for just the third time in 12 games and travel to Indiana on Sunday.
