Dream-Lynx Preview

A stunning victory over the defending WNBA champions has the Minnesota Lynx on a nice run. The Atlanta Dream would like to start one of their own.

The well-rested Lynx go for their first four-game winning streak in three seasons when they host the Dream to open a home-and-home set Friday night.

Despite playing its fourth game in seven days, Minnesota (3-1) scored the game's first 22 points and went on to snap Seattle's 18-game regular-season home winning streak with an 81-74 victory June 9. The Lynx shot a season-best 57.1 percent to enter their seven-day break on a high note.

"We didn't see that (quick start) coming,'' said coach Cheryl Reeve, whose team last won four in a row during a 5-0 start to 2008. "But our defense was pretty good. They missed a lot of shots. And for us to get our early offense, that's our strength. We're awfully good when we play off of misses. We're able to get that ball out quick.''

The Lynx are grabbing a league-best 38.8 rebounds per game - 0.8 more than Atlanta - thanks in large part to reigning Western Conference player of the week Rebekkah Brunson. The veteran forward has reached double figures in scoring and rebounding in each game this season and is averaging a team-high 14.8 points and a league-best 14.0 boards.

"I'm just going to keep playing,'' said Brunson, one shy of tying Nicky Anosike's franchise record of 17 double-doubles. "I'm not really a stats person. I'm not focused on that. I think everybody else is a little more focused on that than I am.''

Brunson could have trouble continuing her double-double run as the Dream (1-3) boast plenty of size up front in 6-foot-4 Sancho Lyttle and 6-5 Erika de Souza. The two players are averaging a combined 24.3 points and 16.8 rebounds.

They will look to help Atlanta build on a 79-58 win at New York on Tuesday that ended a six-game skid, which included a sweep by the Storm in last season's WNBA finals.

"It feels so good right now,'' said forward Angel McCoughtry, averaging a team-high 13.0 points. "This is what we need. I feel we got our losing streak out of the way early. ... So now we can go on our winning streak.''

Atlanta lost 83-81 in its last visit to Minnesota on July 14 despite McCoughtry's 25 points and de Souza's 20 boards. Brunson had the go-ahead layup with 7.2 seconds left as the home team won both matchups in 2010.

The Dream host the Lynx on Sunday to complete the season series.

Augustus helps Lynx beat Dream

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Seimone Augustus scored 15 of her 25 points in the second half and the Minnesota Lynx beat the Atlanta Dream 96-85 on Friday night to improve to 4-1.

Rebekkah Brunson had 18 points and 14 rebounds for her fifth straight double-double, one short of the WNBA record to start a season. Lindsay Whalen added 16 points and eight assists, and Maya Moore had 13 points.

Angel McCoughtry led Atlanta (1-4) with 27 points. Erika de Souza added 18, Iziane Castro Marques 12 and Shalee Lehning 11.

Minnesota took control with a 13-0 run early in the third quarter, keyed by five points by Whalen. She converted a fast-break layup over 6-foot-7 Alison Bales into a three-point play and hit a mid-range jumper.
