Storm-Lynx Preview

The Seattle Storm are off to the second-best start in WNBA history. They've needed to close strong to win twice against the lowly Minnesota Lynx this season.

The Storm look to extend their franchise-record winning streak to 14 on Sunday night when they take on a Lynx club trying to avoid its first five-game skid at home in just over three years.

Since a 72-65 loss at Indiana on June 17, Seattle (22-2) has won 13 in a row en route to clinching the top spot in the Western Conference.

"They are clicking," Chicago center Sylvia Fowles said following Seattle's 80-60 victory over the Sky on Friday. "They've put all of the puzzle pieces together. Everyone on that team is a threat, not just Lauren (Jackson) and Sue (Bird). You have to guard everybody."

The Storm need to win four more in a row to surpass the 1998 Houston Comets, who opened 25-2 and finished 27-3, for the best start in league history.

A repeat effort from Friday could help them move closer to that mark. Seattle scored a season-high 55 first-half points and built a season-best 24-point halftime lead.

"It was nice to get out and get a big lead early," coach Brian Agler said. "I think it's hard for a lot of teams to do that."

Seattle is no exception. After outscoring Minnesota (7-16) by eight in the fourth quarter of a 79-76 home win May 19, the Storm rallied from seven down in the fourth to win 73-71 at Target Center on July 17.

Jackson, second in the WNBA with 21.9 points per game, scored 14 of her 26 in the final 10 minutes of the last matchup.

Lynx forward Rebekkah Brunson, second in the league with 10.7 rebounds per game, had 19 points and nine boards in that meeting.

That loss began Minnesota's five-game slide, its longest since a six-game skid Aug. 9-23.

Percentage points behind Los Angeles for the fourth and final playoff spot in the West, the Lynx will look to bounce back from Thursday's 110-92 loss at Phoenix and snap a four-game home skid.

The last time Minnesota dropped five straight at Target Center was Jun 3-27, 2007.

Lynx point guard Lindsay Whalen is averaging 15.0 points and 4.5 assists against Seattle this season. Bird leads the league with 5.7 assists per game.

Augustus, Lynx snap Storm's 13-game win streak

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Seimone Augustus scored 24 points and the Minnesota Lynx snapped the Seattle Storm's 13-game winning streak with a 72-71 victory Sunday night.

Augustus scored six quick points early in the fourth quarter to extend Minnesota's dwindling lead and became the second-fastest player in WNBA history to reach 2,500 career points, behind only Cynthia Cooper. Charde Houston added 14 points and Lindsay Whalen 11 as the Lynx (8-16) ended a five-game losing skid.

Sue Bird scored 16 points and Tanisha Wright added 15 for Seattle (22-3), which saw it's franchise-best winning streak end. Lauren Jackson, the league's second-leading scorer, finished with 12 points after leaving the game in the second quarter with a sprained left thumb. She returned midway through the third, but seemed bothered by the taped-up thumb.

While Seattle has run away in the West, playing Minnesota has been a challenge. The Storm won the first two contests between the teams by a total of just five points. Seattle had won three straight against Minnesota, each by three points or fewer.

Seattle appeared ready to add to its franchise-record winning streak and keep pace with the 1998 Houston Comets for the best start in WNBA history with a 25-2 start.

The Storm led 15-4 out of the gate, but Minnesota stayed within range and used a 9-0 run to take a 36-27 lead.

Seattle slowly cut the deficit in the second half, and Bird's jumper with 18 seconds remaining tied the score at 71-all.

Augustus missed a jumper on the other end, but Minnesota's Nicky Anosike grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. She made 1 of 2 from the free-throw line and the Lynx held on as Bird's final attempt bounced off the rim.

After winning back-to-back games midway through July, the Lynx sat in second place in the Western Conference. A 73-71 loss to Seattle started the streak of five straight losses and dropped the Lynx into fifth place, percentage points behind Los Angeles for the fourth and final spot in West.
