Comets-Sky Preview
,

For only the third time in the 12-year history of the WNBA, the Houston Comets will miss the postseason.

Because of Hurricane Ike's arrival in Texas this weekend, however, the Comets may have other things on their mind as they play their last road game of the season Sunday against the Chicago Sky.

Hurricane Ike ravaged the Gulf Coast early Saturday morning, flooding streets, blowing out skyscraper windows and cutting power to millions of people across southeast Texas.

The storm, which hit land with winds reaching 110 mph, also caused the postponement of sporting events throughout the state, including the Comets' home finale against Sacramento, originally scheduled for Friday night. That contest may be rescheduled for Monday.

The 2008 campaign will end on a sour note for the Comets (15-17), who won the first four WNBA titles and made the playoffs in nine of the league's first 10 years of existence. Houston will miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season, thanks in part to a 1-5 record since the Olympic hiatus.

The Comets, though, still hope to finish strong. They snapped a five-game skid by beating Connecticut 75-68 behind 21 points and 11 rebounds from Tina Thompson in their last game Tuesday, and can still avoid a losing record with wins in their final two games.

The same can't be said for the Sky (12-21), who enter their season finale two wins shy of last year's total. Chicago, an expansion club in 2006, will have to wait at least one more year to make its first postseason appearance.

The Sky have dropped four of their last five, including a 69-62 loss to New York on Friday night. Candice Dupree had 18 points to lead Chicago, which was outrebounded 37-25 and allowed the Liberty to shoot 45.8 percent from the field.

The Sky, who swept the two-game season series against the Comets in 2007, lost the clubs' first meeting of 2008, 79-65 on July 26. Dupree had 28 points in that game, but was one of only two Chicago players to score in double figures.

Houston, meanwhile, had five players with at least 10 points, including Thompson, who scored a team-high 16.
