Sky-Silver Stars Preview
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO, STATS Writer

Losing two of their last three games has given the San Antonio Silver Stars company atop the tightly packed Western Conference.

They hope a meeting with one of the worst road teams in the WNBA can help them re-establish sole possession of first place Thursday as they host the Chicago Sky.

The Silver Stars (16-8) are tied with Seattle for first in the West as both clubs lead third-place Los Angeles by two games. The conference's seven teams are separated by just five games.

San Antonio, which is 11-2 at home, will try to take advantage of the Storm being idle and move one-half game ahead of them in the standings. The Silver Stars have not played since an 87-74 loss to Minnesota on Saturday, halting their five-game winning streak at AT&T Center.

The Stars could use some consistency from Sophia Young, who shot 5-of-14 for 15 points on Saturday after making 10-of-14 for a season-high 26 points in a 97-87 win at Phoenix on July 15.

The forward, who leads San Antonio with 18.3 points per game, has scored 15 points or less in three of the last five games, including a season low-tying eight in a 75-67 win at Chicago (8-15) on July 10.

Young's erratic stretch has come after a five-game span during which she averaged 22.6 points.

Teammate Becky Hammon, who is second behind Young with 17.3 points a contest and averages a team-high 4.8 assists, has averaged 22.5 points in four games since being held to 12 against the Sky. Hammon had 24 points on Saturday, but also tied a season high with six turnovers.

The Sky, sixth in the East, are 2-9 on the road, tying expansion Atlanta for the fewest road wins in the league. They're 12-33 all-time away from the UIC Pavilion, despite going 8-9 last season, including a 70-60 win at San Antonio on July 9, 2007.

Chicago is coming off a 68-60 home victory over Indiana on Tuesday, two nights after falling 74-67 at Connecticut to extend its road losing streak to five games. The Sky's last road win was a 73-71 victory over Minnesota on July 1.

Sky forward Candice Dupree, second on Chicago with 16.6 points per game and fifth in the WNBA with 8.6 boards, hopes to build on a strong performance Tuesday as she scored 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds.

The forward has been strong on the boards over the last four games, collecting nine in each of the last three games after getting 12 in a 66-63 loss at Detroit on July 16. However, she shot 14-for-50 (28.0 percent) in three games prior to Tuesday's performance.

Dupree had 13 points and eight boards in the last meeting with San Antonio.
