LOS ANGELES, July 14 (AP) -- Candace Parker had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Los Angeles Sparks to a 75-62 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars on Monday night.
"We know that we are very close to where we want to be,'' Leslie said. "We've just got to keep tweaking a few things to get it finished. Regardless of whatever the records are, we still feel good about ourselves and our chances.''
"I felt like we could have controlled our own destiny if we rebounded the ball better,'' said Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes, whose team was outrebounded 41-24. "I thought they were aggressive the whole night.''
San Antonio also had just one offensive rebound and gave up 18 to Los Angeles.
The Silver Stars, who trailed by as many as 13 points in the first quarter, took a 44-43 lead on Wauters' jumper with 3:31 left in the third quarter. However, Parker scored seven points and Leslie had six as the Sparks used a 21-8 surge to move ahead 64-52 with 3:27 left in the fourth.
"Shannon Bobbitt did a great job on Becky Hammon,'' Parker said. "We wanted to take the ball out of (Hammon's) hands so we just buckled down. Many times this year, we've played great defense but then we forget to rebound.''
The Sparks shot a season-low 36.6 percent but scored 20 points off 20 San Antonio turnovers.
Parker had eight points, four rebounds and two steals in the first quarter as Los Angeles built a 17-4 advantage 7:23 into the game.
The game featured four players who will compete in the Olympics: Leslie, Parker and Milton-Jones for the United States and Hammon for Russia.
