Silver Stars-Sky Preview
By MIKE LIPKA, STATS Writer

The Chicago Sky have spent the last few days trying to shake off a loss to a team that hadn't won in 17 tries this season.

On Thursday, they'll see how they do against an opponent that simply hasn't been losing.

The San Antonio Silver Stars will look for their sixth straight victory when they bring the WNBA's longest active winning streak to Chicago, hoping to take over sole possession of the league's best record.

The Sky haven't played since falling 91-84 at Atlanta on Saturday, becoming the first team to lose to the expansion Dream, who had started their first season 0-17.

San Antonio, meanwhile, hasn't lost to any team except Houston over its last 12 games, with a pair of five-game winning streaks separated by a home-and-home sweep at the hands of the intrastate rival Comets.

The Silver Stars (13-6) have won each of their last five games by eight or fewer points, including an 83-79 victory over New York on Tuesday. The high-scoring duo of Becky Hammon and Sophia Young combined for 50 points, with Hammon - who played her first eight seasons with the Liberty - scoring 27.

While Young had at least 20 points for her fifth consecutive game, Hammon continued her near-perfect pace from the free-throw line. Hammon was 14-of-15 Tuesday, making her a league-best 98-of-103 (95.1 percent) for the season.

"We're just doing whatever it takes to win the game," Hammon said. "I just pick what they're giving me and just making decisions out there. Tonight I was able to knock down a few shots and get it going that way a little bit."

While San Antonio has had the bulk of its success at home, going 10-0 at the AT&T Center, the Silver Stars have also won three of their last four road games.

The Sky (5-11) return home after losing the last two games of a three-game road trip. They've dropped seven of nine overall, including Saturday's dubious defeat to the Dream. Chicago led after three quarters, but was outscored 27-18 in the fourth.

"We have to finish plays," Sky coach Steven Key said. "There were several factors that contributed tonight, not just not getting rebounds after missed free throws. We just couldn't finish."

The Silver Stars swept two meetings with the Sky in Chicago's inaugural season in 2006, but the Sky returned the favor last year. Jia Perkins had 27 points off the bench in the teams' most recent matchup, an 84-82 Chicago home win last July 22.

Perkins, now a starter, had 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the loss to Atlanta, and has averaged more than 20 points in her last seven games.
