Although the Houston Comets are tied for the worst record in the Western Conference, they haven't been playing like a last-place team lately.
Houston looks for its first five-game winning streak in more than two years Tuesday when it travels to Mohegan Sun Arena to face the East-leading Connecticut Sun.
The Comets (7-8) lost their first five games and seven of the first eight, and appeared to be on their way to the first back-to-back losing seasons in franchise history. They've won six of their last seven, however, and though they're still tied for last in the West, are just two games behind San Antonio for second place.
Houston extended its run to four games Saturday with a 75-61 victory over Indiana behind a season-high 24 points from rookie Matee Ajavon. That performance tied the Comets' rookie scoring record set by Tina Thompson in 1997 - the WNBA's inaugural season.
Thompson, the league's all-time second-leading scorer, is averaging team highs of 17.2 points and 7.9 rebounds this season. However, she's missed the last two games with a fractured left ring finger and is day-to-day.
A win over the Sun (12-5) would put the Comets at .500 for the first time since the 2006 season. That was also the last time they won five straight games, which they did from May 23-June 4.
Connecticut is tied with Detroit atop the East, but has lost two of its last three. The Sun's only win in that span was an overtime victory over winless Atlanta on Friday.
Connecticut trailed 27-16 after one quarter at home against Phoenix on Sunday and lost 87-80. The Sun shot 35.4 percent from the field, including 21.4 percent (6-for-28) from 3-point range.
"When you shoot 35 percent, you're not going to win very many games," coach Mike Thibault said. "The ball's gotta get in the basket. We didn't get it when we needed it and we gave up a lot of good open looks."
The Sun are led by the trio of Asjha Jones (16.5 points per game), Lindsay Whalen (14.2) and Tamika Whitmore (13.4).
Jones has regularly scored in double figures - she hasn't had fewer than 14 points in her last 11 games - but Whitmore has been considerably less consistent. The forward scored a season-high 28 in the win over the Dream on Friday, but she's failed to hit double digits in five of her last six games.
