Liberty-Monarchs Preview

The New York Liberty have spent the last two weeks alternating wins and losses, looking good at home and getting blown out on the road.

As they embark on their longest trip of the season, they'll at least have some momentum from an exhausting home victory.

Coming off a triple-overtime thriller, the Liberty will look for just their second road win of the season when they kick off their five-game Western trip on Saturday against the Sacramento Monarchs.

New York (7-6) is 1-4 away from home, but has played well at Madison Square Garden, winning three in a row and five of six.

The Liberty had to work a little extra for their latest home win. They trailed Indiana by three with six seconds left in regulation on Thursday, but Cathrine Kraayeveld hit a 3-pointer to force overtime.

The game went to a third overtime, and the Fever led 96-94 with two minutes left before New York scored the final eight points to win 102-96 and improve to 6-2 at home.

Janel McCarville scored a career-high 31 points and Shameka Christon had 23, including six in the third overtime.

"This game was very important, it will help us with our confidence level," said rookie guard Essence Carson, who had a season-high 18 points and seven rebounds. "Right now, we know when we play together as a team good things happen."

The Liberty - who have lost their last two on the road by an average of 18.0 points - will open their five-game, 11-day trip against the last team to beat them at Madison Square Garden.

Sacramento (6-8) trailed by three after three quarters in New York on June 8, but came away with a 70-63 victory.

Ticha Penicheiro, who averages 9.8 points and a team-high 4.9 assists, scored nine of her 18 points in the fourth in that win.

That was the Monarchs' first road win, but they've dropped their last two away from home, including an 80-76 loss at Minnesota on Thursday despite getting 20 points from Nicole Powell.

"I thought we put ourselves in a position to win on the road, which is all you can do," coach Jenny Boucek said. "There's lots of things that we can do better, but we had a chance to win that game."

Sacramento has lost four of five overall and three of its last four at Arco Arena.

The Monarchs may not have one of their best players at 100 percent when they face the Liberty. Kara Lawson (10.0 ppg) suffered a dislocated shoulder while dribbling during the third quarter of the loss to the Lynx, though she returned in the fourth and finished with eight points.

"Kara's going to play if there's any way possible, as long as they let her," Boucek said. "She's as tough as they come."
