Silver Stars-Comets Preview
By KATE HEDLIN, STATS Writer

The San Antonio Silver Stars had their five-game winning streak snapped in overtime at home by the Houston Comets in their last contest. They'll try for some revenge Thursday when the teams finish out their home-and-home series.

The Silver Stars (8-5) and Comets (5-8) met Tuesday at the AT&T Center in their second matchup of the season. Houston, last in the Western Conference, knocked off second-place San Antonio 82-81 in overtime.

Tina Thompson's 13-foot jumper with 1.2 seconds left gave the Comets to the victory. She finished with 16 points despite fracturing the ring finger on her non-shooting hand when she was hip-checked by Sophia Young early in the first quarter and fell into the courtside seats.

"It was 'Get Tina the Ball,'" Houston coach Karleen Thompson said of the last play. "We ran the play from out of bounds and it was going straight to Tina and to get Tina open. We got her the ball and that was it. No play is needed for that."

The teams were tied 10 times in a game that saw 21 lead changes. San Antonio's Becky Hammon sent the game into overtime by hitting two free throws with 37 seconds remaining. Hammon finished with 25 points.

"It was a good basketball game for both teams. We were able to make good plays down the stretch, but they also did the same," Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes said. "We knew they were going to look for her (Tina) and we didn't react quick enough. She made a heck of a shot."

The loss was the Silver Stars' first since June 8, and their first at home this season. San Antonio has not lost back-to-back games since suffering road losses May 30 and June 3.

The Stars have won their last two road games by an average of 12.5 points.

The Comets have won four of five and will be trying for their first three-game winning streak since May 23-June 4, 2006, when they recorded five straight victories.

Thompson, the Comets' leading scorer with 17.2 points per game, expects to be able to go Thursday.

"I'm going to go back and get a second opinion, but it looked pretty bad," Thompson said. "It hurts a little bit, but I was able to come back and play, so I was excited about that."

The clubs have split the last eight games in Houston, with the Comets winning 75-72 there June 3.
