Storm-Sparks Preview
By DAN PIERINGER, STATS Writer

Los Angeles Sparks forward Lisa Leslie became the first WNBA player to dunk in a game six years ago. Over the weekend, she saw her new teammate join the exclusive club.

After becoming the second player in league history to dunk in a game, Los Angeles forward Candace Parker looks to continue her remarkable rookie season as the Western Conference-leading Sparks host the Seattle Storm on Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-5 Leslie had the first dunk in WNBA history in a loss to the now-defunct Miami Sol on July 30, 2002. It was a landmark moment for the league, then in its sixth season.

With Michael Cooper, the Sparks' coach since 1999, and Leslie watching from down court Sunday, Parker thrilled her home crowd with a slam - something she did several times while starring at Tennessee. She took a pass from Raffaella Masciadri, dribbled the length of the court and dunked with her right hand with 29 seconds left to punctuate Los Angeles' 77-63 win over Indiana.

"When I caught the ball and there was an open lane, it was a good opportunity," said Parker, the 6-4 phenom who's averaging 16.8 points and 9.6 rebounds. "I'm happy that I was able to do it in Los Angeles in front of the home fans.

"Obviously, it means a lot having the first person to do it on my team. There's going to be more to come in the league itself."

Parker finished with a season low-tying 10 points Sunday, but added 10 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots. Leslie, a three-time league MVP, had 17 points and nine boards.

The Sparks' dynamic frontcourt duo looks to help Los Angeles (9-3) stay alone in first place in the West as the club meets reigning MVP Lauren Jackson and the Storm (8-6).

Jackson had 18 points and five rebounds to lead Seattle to a 78-70 win over Indiana on Friday night. The 6-5 forward from Australia also keyed some late defensive stands as the Storm outscored the Fever 24-13 in the fourth quarter.

"We work a lot on our defense, obviously. We emphasize it," Storm coach Brian Agler said. "It was just a tremendous team effort out there defensively during that stretch. We've got very good competitors on this team. ... That's something we can do. It's something we've been working on all season, it's something we've come to rely on and it feels good."

Agler also has to be pleased with his team's recent play against Los Angeles. Under coach Anne Donovan last season, the Storm swept the season series with the Sparks for the first time, winning four games by an average of 21.5 points.

That Los Angeles team, however, was playing without Leslie, who missed the entire season while on maternity leave.
