The San Antonio Silver Stars will put a pair of winning streaks on the line Tuesday night when they host the Houston Comets in the start of a home-and-home series.
Since falling to 3-4 with a 90-78 loss at Minnesota on June 8, San Antonio (8-4) has gone 5-0 - its longest unbeaten run since taking six in a row from July 1-20. The Silver Stars' current streak also includes three straight victories at the AT&T Center, where the team has set a new franchise record with a 6-0 home start.
San Antonio's most recent victory may have been its most impressive. It beat Western Conference-leading Los Angeles 77-75 at home on Friday behind 21 points from Ann Wauters.
"We know L.A. is a great team, but it feels so good to beat them," said Wauters, averaging 19.3 points and 9.7 rebounds while shooting 53.8 percent (21-for-39) from the field in her last three games. "Especially in front of our crowd, which was phenomenal today and gave us all a really good feeling."
Sophia Young had 20 points, and Becky Hammon added 19, six rebounds and five assists for San Antonio, which trails Los Angeles by one game.
The Silver Stars now face the Comets (4-8), who have shown signs of improvement after a slow start. Houston lost its first five games this season, but comes in having won three of its last four, including a 72-65 victory at Minnesota on Saturday.
Tina Thompson had 18 points and eight rebounds and Shannon Johnson added 16 points for the Comets, whose defense held the Lynx to a franchise-low six points in the first quarter and 27.5 percent shooting overall.
Houston also limited Minnesota's Seimone Augustus - who entered the game as the WNBA's fifth-leading scorer (19.4 points) - to 12.
The Comets, who won one of two games in San Antonio in 2007, got their first win this season by beating the Silver Stars 75-72 in the Texas rivals' first meeting on June 3. Thompson had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Houston, while Hammon led San Antonio with 20 points and seven assists.
The Comets and Silver Stars each average 72.3 points.
Houston will play host to San Antonio on Thursday.
