Storm-Silver Stars Preview
By MIKE LIPKA, STATS Writer

When the Seattle Storm signed Sheryl Swoopes in March, they weren't sure what they would get from a 37-year-old forward who played only three games last year due to injury.

If Swoopes keeps producing the way she has recently, the Storm could turn out to be the WNBA's most dangerous team.

The three-time league MVP will look to build on a pair of impressive performances and lead Seattle to a third straight win Friday when Seattle visits the San Antonio Silver Stars.

The Storm (7-3) already figured to be contenders in the Western Conference, with reigning league MVP Lauren Jackson, star point guard Sue Bird and newly acquired forward Swin Cash on the roster.

Seattle didn't know what to expect from Swoopes, who underwent back surgery in October. In her 11th season with the Houston Comets last year, she averaged only 7.7 points in three games due to injury.

After struggling initially with her new team, however, Swoopes has totaled 32 points in the last two games, shooting 12-of-21 from the field and 5-of-10 from 3-point range over that span. She had a season-high 17 points in an 83-77 win over Phoenix on Wednesday, including a key 3-pointer in the final minute.

"I'm finally getting my timing back," said Swoopes, who's averaged 16.5 points in her WNBA career. "Obviously, the physical part is important but right now it's more mental than physical. To be able to come out and just play and enjoy it and not feeling the pain I was feeling before is a great feeling."

Jackson had 20 points and Cash added 17 against the Mercury, giving Seattle its sixth consecutive home win to start the season even though Bird was 1-of-12 from the field.

The Storm beat the Silver Stars 78-57 at home May 30, but Seattle's worst loss of the season came at San Antonio six days before that, when Silver Stars forward Sophia Young had 23 points to help her team to an 87-72 win.

Young missed Sunday's 90-78 loss at Minnesota with a sore groin, but returned to score 17 points in leading San Antonio (4-4) to a 64-53 win over Indiana on Wednesday.

"It was great to have Sophia Young back on the court tonight," Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes said. "Sophia's perimeter game is so good that when teams choose to play off of her, she makes them pay."

The Silver Stars remained undefeated at home. All four of their victories have come at the AT&T Center, with the last three coming by double digits.

Seattle, loser of three straight on the road, has dropped its last four visits to San Antonio.
