After recording their first road win of the year in their last game, the Sacramento Monarchs try to make it two in a row Wednesday when they visit the slumping Washington Mystics in a matchup of the WNBA's two lowest-scoring teams.
The Monarchs (3-4) began their three-game trip Sunday with a 70-63 win over New York. Sacramento had lost its previous three road contests by an average of 15 points, but rallied from a three-point deficit in the third quarter by holding the Liberty to 10 points in the final period.
The win ended an eight-game road losing streak that included back-to-back losses at San Antonio during the first round of the 2007 playoffs.
"Maybe it is the experience versus a younger team," said 10-year veteran Tina Penicheiro, who led the Monarchs with 18 points. "We just had a conscious effort today of really trying to get this win. We hadn't won on the road. We thought that in the past games we really have folded in the fourth quarter, so today we talked about being focused throughout the whole game. And I thought we did that."
Penicheiro scored 16 points in the second half for Sacramento, which had every starter finish in double figures. Kara Lawson added 11 points - six in the final quarter - while Nicole Powell had 14, Adrian Williams-Strong 11 and Rebekkah Brunson 10.
"I thought we played great," Penicheiro said. "We had a lot of people contributing for this win. It's a great win for us."
Powell and Brunson average a team-leading 12.0 points for the Monarchs, the WNBA's second-lowest scoring team at 70.0 points per game. On Wednesday, they'll face the lowest-scoring club in the Mystics (2-6), who average 68.1 points and come in having lost four straight.
Washington returns home after an 0-3 trip, capping the road swing with an 87-79 defeat to Connecticut on Sunday. Monique Currie scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting and Alana Beard had 21 points, but it wasn't enough as the Mystics were outscored 29-12 in the third quarter.
Connecticut went on a 19-0 run to start the third and Washington didn't score until Coco Miller hit a jump shot with 3:07 left.
Washington, 2-1 at home, plays three of its next five at the Verizon Center. The Mystics' four-game skid is their longest losing streak since opening last year 0-8.
The Monarchs have won six straight over the Mystics since a 67-63 overtime loss Sept 7, 2004.
