Mercury-Storm Preview
By DAN PIERINGER, STATS Writer

The Seattle Storm rebounded from back-to-back defeats by remaining undefeated at home in their last game. They'll put that unblemished record on the line against a team that recently showed it can win big games on the road.

The Storm go for their league-best sixth home win on Wednesday night when they host the defending WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury.

Seattle (6-3) struggled on a two-game road trip last week, suffering double-digit losses at New York and Detroit to fall to 1-8 in its last nine road games dating to last season.

That stretch includes one playoff loss at Phoenix, where the Mercury began their championship run by sweeping a best-of-three first-round series from the Storm.

A return to Seattle helped the Storm get back on track on Saturday. Reigning league MVP Lauren Jackson had 24 points, six rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots and Seattle improved to 5-0 at KeyArena with a 75-67 win over the Shock, who had won six straight.

Seattle is tied with Connecticut for the league lead in home wins

"We were just trying to win," Jackson said. "We had lost two in a row and it was definitely frustrating losing. But just being able to win the way we did with everyone playing well, it felt good."

Jackson had a season-high 30 points and added nine rebounds in an 87-83 victory over the Mercury (2-4) in the clubs' first meeting May 22.

"Lauren is a tremendously tough matchup for everybody because she's so versatile and can score from anywhere on the floor," Storm coach Brian Agler said Saturday.

Phoenix's loss to Seattle was part of an 0-4 start, but the club has bounced back with consecutive victories including an impressive comeback win in Los Angeles on Friday night.

Diana Taurasi scored 13 of her 29 points in the fourth quarter and Cappie Pondexter added 28 as the Mercury rallied from an 18-point deficit to beat the Sparks 85-79, spoiling the home opener for rookie phenom Candace Parker and three-time WNBA MVP Lisa Leslie.

"You know it really doesn't mean much in the big picture, it's just another game," said Taurasi, who on Monday was named Western Conference player of the week after two 29-point performances. "We played better as a team and got down 18 early and we found a way to get back in it. In the last two minutes we made shots, and it determined the game."

Taurasi (23.7 points per game) and Pondexter (league-leading 26.3) totaled 44 points in the Mercury's loss to the Storm in May.
