Fever-Silver Stars Preview
By KATE HEDLIN, STATS Writer

Led by Katie Douglas, the Indiana Fever have gotten off to a good start to the season - one that's all the more impressive considering the absence of last year's leading scorer.

Douglas and the Fever look to continue their strong play when they visit the slumping San Antonio Silver Stars on Wednesday, the first of two meetings between the teams this week.

Indiana (4-2) won for the third time in four games Saturday, 84-75 over Houston. The Fever took a 17-point lead with 9:42 remaining and after Houston cut the lead to nine with 3:14 left, regrouped and didn't let the Comets get any closer.

Douglas, who scored 15 of her 20 points before halftime, had four points in the final 81 seconds.

"It's a bad habit that we need to break," Douglas said of allowing the large lead to dwindle. "It's not something we can continue to do and expect to win. There's just so much parity in the WNBA that even when you have a double-digit lead, it doesn't mean anything."

Douglas shot 6-of-17 from the field, but she bounced back after scoring only nine points in the loss to Detroit. The seven-year veteran is averaging 21.2 points and is a big reason why the Fever have managed to stay competitive despite the absence of Tamika Catchings.

Catchings, the team's top scorer at 16.6 points per game last year, hasn't played this season because of a torn right Achilles' tendon.

"I think we might have surprised some people, but I don't think in the locker room we've surprised ourselves," Douglas said.

The Fever play six of their nine remaining games this month on the road, but their next four games are against teams with losing records, including two versus San Antonio (3-4).

The Silver Stars have lost three of four, but are hoping to bounce back Wednesday when they look to improve on a 3-0 home record. San Antonio plays four of its next six at home.

The Silver Stars are coming off a 90-78 defeat to Minnesota on Sunday. Ann Wauters had 24 points and 10 rebounds while Becky Hammon added 14 points and five assists, but a 20-5 Lynx run in the fourth quarter put the Stars away.

"We got to that point, made a good comeback, just thought we weren't sturdy enough once we got it down to one really," coach Dan Hughes said.

San Antonio, the WNBA's worst-shooting team at 38.7 percent, went 24-for-56 (42.9 percent) from the field Sunday.

The Fever and Silver Stars close out their season series Sunday at Conseco Fieldhouse. They split the two meetings last season, each winning on the road.
