Comets-Storm Preview
By JEFF MEZYDLO, STATS Senior Writer

For the first 10 seasons of her career, Sheryl Swoopes' play for the Houston Comets made her a WNBA legend.

Now a member of the Seattle Storm, Swoopes looks to help her new team remain perfect at home when she faces the Comets on Sunday night for the first time since leaving Houston in the offseason.

One of the league's original stars, Swoopes led Houston to the first four WNBA titles from 1997-2000. During her time with the Comets, she won three league MVPs and was a six-time All-Star. Swoopes ranks fourth on the league's all-time scoring list with 4,432 points.

"Being a part of the championships in Houston is a great memory, and I really like the team we have in Seattle this year," Swoopes said.

While she may not be the dominant player she once was, Swoopes - who signed with Seattle (4-1) after missing all but three games due to a back injury in 2007 - has been more of a role player on a Storm team featuring fellow All-Stars Lauren Jackson, Swin Cash, Sue Bird and Yolanda Griffith.

Swoopes is averaging 6.6 points in 24 minutes per contest. She scored nine in Seattle's 78-57 win over San Antonio on Friday night.

Jackson scored 16 of her 28 points in the first quarter, one game after being held to 14 points in a five-point loss to the Silver Stars on May 24.

Cash added 14 points, while Griffith pulled down 10 rebounds and Bird had 10 assists Friday for the Storm, who matched the 2005 team for the best start in franchise history and improved to 3-0 at home.

"We're just getting more confidence playing with each other," said Bird, who's averaging 11.2 points and 7.0 assists.

Jackson, the league's reigning MVP who's averaging 20.6 points on the season and 24.0 in her last three contests, averaged 28.5 against Houston in 2007 as the Storm went 3-1 in the season series.

For the second straight year, Houston (0-4) is enduring a losing streak to begin the season. The Comets dropped a franchise-high 10 consecutive games to open 2007.

"We can't think about that (losing streak), we're not looking down the road, we're thinking about our next game against Seattle," said Houston coach Karleen Thompson, whose team lost 73-66 at Sacramento on Friday.

Tina Thompson and rookie Matee Ajavon each had 14 points for the Comets, who shot 29.4 percent and went scoreless for more than 4 minutes in the fourth quarter.

"We haven't been executing in games down the stretch, we're turning the ball over and not getting stops," said Karleen Thompson, whose team will play four of its first five games on the road.

Tina Thompson, the Comets' leading scorer at 17.0 points per game, averaged just 13.5 against the Storm last season.
