Currie’s Clutch Three Lifts Mystics Over Sun

Washington 76, Connecticut 74

UNCASVILLE, Conn., Aug. 19 (AP) -- Monique Currie made a 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left to give Washington a 76-74 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, but the Mystics missed the playoffs when the New York Liberty won later in the day.

The Liberty defeated the Chicago Sky 58-52 to finish with the same record as the Mystics (16-18), but advanced because they held the tiebreaker.

Connecticut took a 74-73 lead with 21.5 seconds remaining after Lindsay Whalen made one of two free throws. With less than 3 seconds remaining, Alana Beard had the ball for the Mystics.

"(Sun center Margo) Dydek came at me and I didn't want to force a shot over a 7-footer,'' said Beard, who kicked the ball out to Currie for the winning shot.

"I saw the clock and knew I had to shoot it,'' Currie said. "Luckily, it went in.''

Beard led the Mystics with 21 points.

Katie Douglas had 21 points for the Sun (18-16), while Whalen added 19 points and seven assists.

Washington trailed 49-38 at halftime, but opened the second half with a 14-0 run. Connecticut narrowed the gap in the fourth.

The Sun led 26-16 after the first quarter.

Connecticut, which already made the playoffs, will face Indiana on Thursday in the first round.

"Obviously, I'm disappointed with the last two games,'' Whalen said. "But at the same time, it's playoff time and we got ourselves in the position to be in the playoffs. Now we have to go in and take it one game at a time.''
