Jones’ Jumper Lifts the Sun Win Over the Comets

UNCASVILLE, July 22, 2007 (AP) -- Asjha Jones hit an 11-foot jumper with 2.9 seconds remaining to give the Connecticut Sun an 81-79 win over the Houston Comets on Sunday.

Jones finished with 22 points for Connecticut (12-11), which won its sixth-straight game and edged above .500 for the first time in six weeks. Katie Douglas led the Sun with 25 points.

Tina Thompson and Tamecka Dixon had 18 points each for Houston (7-16).

Thompson hit a jumper to put the Comets up 79-77 with 53.2 seconds remaining, but Evanthia Maltsi tied it 17 seconds later. That set up Jones' game winner, on an assist by Douglas.

Douglas scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, including eight straight to put the Sun up 64-62. The teams traded foul shots before Houston went on a 9-0 run and appeared on the verge of pulling away at 72-66.

Douglas broke the Sun's scoring drought, making it a single possession game with 3:21 left to play. Lindsay Whalen hit a pair of free throws for Connecticut to tie it at 77 with 1:15 remaining.

The teams were tied 34-34 at the half, but Houston jumped out to a 42-36 lead to begin the third quarter. But the Sun responded with a 14-4 run to take a 50-46 lead.

Houston lost 10 straight games to open the season and has gone 7-6 since, despite the loss of Sheryl Swoopes to injury.
