SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 23 (AP) -- Ticha Penicheiro scored eight points in the final 2:07, and the Sacramento Monarchs held off the Detroit Shock for a 85-75 victory Saturday night in a rematch of the WNBA finals.
Scholanda Robinson scored a season-high 13 points and Rebekkah Brunson added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Monarchs (9-4), who hung on to a late lead with a surprising flurry of points from Penicheiro, their shooting-shy point guard.
Yolanda Griffith also scored 11 points for Sacramento, which lost its season opener in Detroit. The Monarchs split the season series with the Shock (10-2) in a lively meeting of the league's respective conference leaders again this season.
Deanna Nolan scored a season-high 23 points for Detroit, which claimed the five-game finals last season with a stunning victory in Game 4 at Arco Arena to avoid elimination.
Katie Smith, who scored 17 points for Detroit, hit a 3-pointer with 2:27 to play to trim the Monarchs' 16-point second-half lead to 74-73.
But Penicheiro, who finished with 12 points, hit a long jumper when the Shock left her unguarded. After Nicole Powell hit a free throw, Penicheiro came off a screen and hit another wide-open shot with 1:10 to play, putting Sacramento up 79-73.
Penicheiro added two free throws with 28 seconds left, then hit a breakaway layup moments later.
Sacramento won for the fourth time in five games, while Detroit's four-game road trip ended with its first loss away from home this season. Both teams played draining road games Friday night, with Sacramento losing in double overtime in Los Angeles while Detroit was working on a comeback victory in Phoenix.
Both teams played their vaunted defensive style in the first half, with Detroit holding Sacramento to 34 percent shooting while the Monarchs limited the Shock to just 30 points.
Kara Lawson provided the half's biggest highlight when she leaped to swat rookie Ivory Latta's 3-point attempt into the stands 1.2 seconds before halftime. Lawson then posed with her hands on her hips while Kings players Kevin Martin, Ron Artest and Francisco Garcia laughed and cheered.
Cheryl Ford sat out for the fourth time in Detroit's last five games with a sprained left knee.
