Detroit 87, Phoenix 84

PHOENIX, June 22 (AP) -- Shannon Johnson scored 23 points, and the Detroit Shock rallied from a 16-point third-quarter deficit to beat the Phoenix Mercury 87-84 Friday night.

Detroit (10-1) ran off 10 straight points while the Mercury missed 12 of their first 14 shots in the fourth quarter, allowing the Shock to pull ahead 81-80 with 3:04 left.

Plenette Pierson had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and made an 8-footer with 1:50 remaining to put Detroit ahead for good. Kara Braxton added 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Katie Smith had 11 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Johnson made 7-of-12 from beyond the arc for Detroit, which has won three in a row.

Penny Taylor scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had four assists for Phoenix (7-7). Diana Taurasi had 13 points and eight assists, but missed two 3-pointers in the final 13.9 seconds that would have tied the game.

Tangela Smith added 15 points for Phoenix, which led 75-59 with 1:30 left in the third quarter. The league's highest scoring team, Phoenix was held to nine fourth-quarter points.

Both teams played without their second-leading scorers. Detroit's Cheryl Ford was sidelined with a left ankle sprain, and the Mercury's Cappie Pondexter sat out her second straight game with a strained left groin.
