Mystics Eclipse Century Mark; Sink Mercury

Washington 106, Phoenix 101

PHOENIX, June 20 (AP) -- Alana Beard had a season-high 29 points and DeLisha Milton-Jones added 22 to lead the Washington Mystics to a 106-101 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night.

Bernice Mosby had 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Beard added six rebounds and five assists to help Washington (2-9) set a franchise scoring record. The Mystics, whose only other win this season came last Wednesday at home against Phoenix, topped the previous mark of 97 set in 2002.

""Everything was working,'' Beard said. "I think this was probably one of the games where we actually just moved the ball. I got a lot of my shots off of the rotations from the ball movement around the horn. We played great defense, we got it off of the rebounds, and I was just in the right place at the right time.''

Diana Taurasi scored 25 points to lead the Mercury (7-6), who had won three of four. Penny Taylor added 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists before fouling out with 3:40 left, and Tangela Smith had 20 points and seven rebounds.

""Sometimes it just like the other team has got your number,'' Smith said. "Washington has ours. They definitely came out aggressive and we were trying to match their intensity.''

The Mystics led by as much as eight in the second quarter while Phoenix had the same size advantage in the third.

However, Washington, which outrebounded Phoenix 49-31, broke an 83-all tie on Milton-Jones' 18-footer and Mosby's hook midway through the final quarter.

Taurasi, who missed 6-of-7 shots in the fourth period and 7-of-9 in the second half, found Tangela Smith for a layup to cut Washington's lead to 95-94 with 2:38 remaining. Kelly Mazzante then missed a 22-footer that would have tied the game with 2:08 left and Taurasi missed a short shot in the lane with 1:38 remaining and Phoenix down by four.

"I'm glad we're not going to see them again,'' Mercury coach Paul Westhead said. "Sometimes there's a certain team that just feels comfortable playing you. Apparently whatever we did in Washington brought out a good feeling for them.''

Phoenix played without second-leading scorer Cappie Pondexter, who sat out with a strained groin suffered in Phoenix's win over Indiana on Friday.

"She hasn't practiced since the injury,'' Westhead said. "It's a muscular problem and she's day to day.''

Notes: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the combined 207 points in regulation is the highest in WNBA history. The previous high was 204, when Sacramento topped Detroit, 108-96, on July 1, 2000.
