LOS ANGELES, June 19 (AP)-- Katie Smith scored seven of her 18 points in the final 2:22 and grabbed a season-high nine rebounds to lead the Detroit Shock to a 79-73 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday night.
Deanna Nolan added 15 points, and Kara Braxton had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Shock (8-1).
LaToya Thomas had a season-high 19 points for the Sparks (5-4). Taj McWilliams-Franklin added 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Mwadi Mabika scored 16 points.
Los Angeles held a 70-68 lead with 3:18 to go, but Smith made a 3-pointer with 2:22 left and followed with two free throws with 1:36 remaining to put the Shock ahead 73-70.
Thomas' jumper narrowed the Sparks' deficit to 73-72 with 1:13 left. Detroit made six straight free throws in the final 59.9 seconds to secure the victory.
The Shock used a 9-2 run to take a 24-15 lead before building a 15-point advantage in the second quarter. Los Angeles responded with a 16-2 spurt to move ahead 53-52 with 5:09 left in the third quarter.
Detroit's Cheryl Ford, who leads the WNBA with 10.4 rebounds, missed her second consecutive game because of a sprained left knee.
