Meanwhile, the Mystics (18-15) already were locked into a first-round matchup with the Sun but set a franchise record for victories, snapping the previous mark set in 2002.
Washington rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit thanks to a big third quarter from Milton-Jones, who scored 12 points as the Mystics outscored the Shock, 24-11.
Beard sealed the win with a steal and a layup with 1:20 to play that gave Washington a 72-63 lead.
Nakia Sanford had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Nikki Teasley scored 10 points for the Mystics, who won despite shooting under 43 percent (27-of-63) and committing 16 turnovers.
Katie Smith and Deanna Nolan scored 12 points apiece to pace Detroit, which shot only 35 percent (26-of-73) and was outrebounded, 41-33.
