INDIANAPOLIS, July 25 (Ticker) -- The streaking Sacramento Monarchs were
stopped in their tracks by the Indiana Fever.
Tamika Whitmore scored 20 points and Tamika Catchings added 16
as the Fever ended three winning streaks by the Monarchs with a
convincing 75-60 victory.
The Monarchs (16-9) arrived with unbeaten runs of seven games
overall and four games on the road. In addition, the defending
champions were 9-0 against the Eastern Conference this season.
Sacramento appeared as if it would extend those streaks as it
opened a 37-30 lead on a pair of free throws by Ticha Penicheiro
early in the third quarter. However, Indiana responded with a
15-2 run to take the lead for good.
Whitmore capped the balanced burst at 45-39 on two foul shots
with 3:11 left. It was at least a two-possession game
thereafter.
Indiana (16-9) held a 53-43 lead entering the final period and
continued to pull away. The final margin represented the Fever's
largest lead.
Tan White scored 12 points and fellow reserve La'Tangela Atkinson added 11 for the Fever, who shot 54.5 percent
(24-of-44) from the field, the second-best mark in club history.
Reserve DeMya Walker scored 14 points but was the only player in
double figures for the Monarchs, who shot under 35 percent
(22-of-63) and were outrebounded, 33-21.
Next games: Sacramento continues its four-game road trip with a visit to Detroit on Wednesday. Indiana gets a few days off before hosting Washington on Saturday.
