The Liberty absorbed their franchise-worst ninth consecutive loss as they fell behind early against the Sacramento Monarchs and could not complete a rally en route to a 71-62 setback.

Playing its fourth straight game without injured All-Star guard Becky Hammon, New York (4-18) managed just eight points in the opening quarter and found itself trailing, 38-24, at the half.

However, the Liberty did show some fight in the fourth, managing to slice a 55-38 deficit with 9:07 remaining to 61-58 after Iciss Tillis' jumper with just over four minutes left capped an 11-0 run.

DeMya Walker sank a pair of free throws for the Monarchs and, after a jumper by the Liberty's Erin Thorn, Kara Lawson hit a 3-pointer and Yolanda Griffith and Ticha Penicheiro combined on three free throws as Sacramento pulled ahead, 69-60, with 41 seconds remaining.

Nicole Powell scored 13 points and Walker chipped in 12 off the bench for the Monarchs, who won their sixth straight overall and improved to 10-2 at home this season.

Thorn scored a career-high 20 points and Tillis added 12 for New York, which committed 17 turnovers.
